Who’s yvette sojourner?
Hi there, I’m Yvette Sojourner!
Have you ever heard Macklemore’s line in Ciara’s song “I Love Myself”? It goes, “If loving myself’s a job, am I doing it?” That lyric struck a chord with me, prompting a deep dive into my life’s narrative. What I discovered was a glaring absence: self-love.
For years, the concept of self-love felt foreign, almost like a luxury I couldn’t afford. It seemed synonymous with selfishness or vanity. However, I’ve come to realize that self-love isn’t just a fancy idea; it’s essential. It’s not something that came naturally to me – it’s been a journey, one that I’m still on. It’s so easy to forget my own worth, to pour love into everything and everyone else, while leaving myself behind. But here’s the truth: self-love is a process, a vital, ongoing one.
Through my platform, I aim to embrace and share this journey. It’s about radical self-love and self-care – a path I hope will inspire, empower, and maybe just remind you to cherish and prioritize yourself.
Oprah once said, “What I know for sure…” – and here’s my take on that: Loving myself radically isn’t just important, it’s my full-time job!
My life tapestry includes my expertise in mental health, my identity as a Black woman, and my experiences of overcoming significant challenges. These facets of my life give me a unique perspective, allowing me to connect with diverse stories and struggles. (Credit to my bestie for this insight – loved it, had to share!)
My decade in the military, my experiences with PTSD and MST, and my time of incarceration have shaped me. But I didn’t stop there. I earned a doctorate in Higher Education Administration, focusing on qualitative research and cultural studies, and hold a master’s in Sports Psychology and a bachelor’s in Psychology with a minor in Sociology.
I’ve served in the nonprofit world, volunteered on various boards and councils, and participated in veteran research groups. My role as a digital storytelling facilitator, particularly for veterans, has shown me the transformative power of sharing and reframing narratives, for both the storyteller and the listener.
Embracing and sharing our stories is not just powerful – it’s necessary. And I’m here for it, every step of the way.
